A History of Rural Abandonment
In Spain, 80% of the population has flocked to urban cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, leaving only 20% of Spain’s population to steward the agricultural areas that make up 70% of the land. In Greek Mythology, Olive Oil has been referred to as “liquid gold" and “the great healer”, a testament to the once sustained value and appreciation for this craft, and the olive oil industry once served profitable for residents of Spain’s expansive farming areas. Why, then, have Spain’s sacred olive orchards been left to decay?
The Spanish have a name for this vast migration: La España Vaciada (the emptied Spain) - the abandonment of Spain’s natural resources by younger generations who have left to chase more profitable labor opportunities.
Cúrate has teamed up with Apadrina un Olivo (Sponsor an Olive Tree) to further their mission to revive the natural resources of these rural areas, provide employment opportunities to its residents, generate sustainable rural development in depopulated areas, and encourage visitors to these beautiful, once-forgotten areas. According to the organization, “Simplicity is the key to success, to recover is to repopulate.” The overall impact of reviving these olive orchards is both positive for the environment and for its residents.
What Your Contribution Will Facilitate: Help Rebuild Sustainable Agricultural Societies for the Greater Benefit of Our Planet
• Regenerate and revive the cultural heritage of 100,000 abandoned centenary and millenary olive trees through rebuilding rural practices of land stewardship. Additionally, help recover 25,000 olive trees in abandoned orchards and put them into production in a sustainable and organic way, benefiting our environment as a whole.
• Provide access to housing and decent employment to socially excluded groups in rural areas.
• Facilitate employment opportunities for women within these rural areas, who have played an integral role in Spain’s production of olive oil since the early days of the industry, including in business leadership and the technical aspects of production. Women encompass at least 60% of the total number of workers in this non-profit project.
• Provide employment for vulnerable communities and the disabled. 10% of workers are affected by disabilities, which would otherwise limit them from rural employment opportunities.
• Fund social entrepreneurship training and environmental education to the residents of these rural areas. Education of success stories in olive oil farming and production will teach others how to replicate this practice and avoid the further loss of rural inhabitants.
• Improve the overall quality of life in agrarian areas and ensure the same opportunities that can be enjoyed in Spain’s urban areas.
• Rejuvenate sustainable farming practices and environmental stewardship in order to revive these once agrarian societies, restore abandoned vegetable gardens, and rebuild farming ecosystems.
